Meyersche Stollen (Meyer Tunnels)

In Aarau there is also a lot to see underground. A mysterious underground world has existed for over 200 years, with a fascinating system of passages, spaces and shafts below the city.

The tunnel system was laid out in the 18th century by textile industrialist Johann Rudolf Meyer who wanted to use it to collect ground water and direct it to a waterwheel below his factory. Guided tours are offered by the youth organisation Pfadi St. Georg Aarau and the archaeologist Hélène Klemm.
