The Upper Tower Gate dates back to the 13th century, but was originally not as high. It was only raised to become the Hochwacht (high watchtower) during the 15th/16th centuries. It used to house a jail and the residence of the tower watchman. On the ninth floor you can still admire the iron wheel clock from 1532, and under the roof are chimes.
The Upper Gate is made up of a gatehouse which is built onto the tower and projects opposite the original wall. The Upper Tower is open to visitors. Information on guided tours is available from the “aarau info” tourist office located on the Schlossplatz.
